The term 'grandmaster' is usually associated with chess, where I think it has become somewhat inflationary. I'm not an expert though - would chess players agree that not every grandmaster should (or rather, should ever have been) considered world class?
Considering there are some 1,000+ grandmasters in the world...
The gulf between Kasparov and GM #1,285 is enormous.
