Well, I definitely think that without these capabilities and some more like handling with all MEC about higher value of cube (4 and 8) and all those calculation about gammon values, one can't play consistently on highest level,
Honestly most of these are not that hard to memorize if you're so inclined and for the most part I don't think it makes a difference. If you have an 8 cube coming at you and really want to calculate a GV you can probably take a couple minutes to do it.
But with some talent and will to devote about 10-20 hours per week to game and with extensive bot, GoL, BGo, after studying all those books and reading many articles referenced on BG Galore!, I am convinced how is possible to play at 3.8 ER level after 5-6 years for many players.
I don't see why this is necessary. I think I'm playing at that level and I've only been playing BG at all for 3 years. And the truth is that anyone can do it.
Why can't you just play at a 1.8? Although I think the things separating 1.8 players from 3.8 players are not GVs on 8-cubes.
