I think avoiding errors is not possible without knowledge. It is possible to play at 1.8 in racing or holding games but reach that level playing in backgames, priming games, or some blitz games where difficult cube decision involves is far from easy IMHO, especially in long run, and I think one have to be brilliant to reach 1.8 level of play in long run. Also, I didn't say that one need many years of study and play to reach 3.8 level. I said one need five years. Okay, you need three years for that. It is obvious that you are more talented than average backgammon players so you need less time but it is also true that you spent a lot of time in study at least in last six months, aren't you.
