Knowledge, yes; brilliance, no. I am not sure if I am more talented than the average backgammon player but I certainly study far more than the average backgammon player. On the other hand, I don't study backgammon as much as I studied chess, and I was hardly great at chess. I wasn't bad, but I certainly wasn't great.
Bob: Avoid making errors and you get a very good error rate. Did that really need to be stated explicitly?
Yes, I think so. Even if it is a triviality. My point is: focus on the fundamentals and you'll do well.
