As a scientist I can say that deleting anything should lead one to exercise caution. One option would be to archive any post you are going to delete to a DVD or other long-term (private) storage medium.

The real problem arises when you accidentally delete something you later wish you had saved. I can imagine that this could easily happen since otherwise you're going to have to carefully read every last word before deleting..., well, you're not that obsessive-compulsive, IMO.
