I also like Magriel as a textbook. I would mention to your class that you can find copies at places like ebay or craigslist, and perhaps you can work a multi-copy discount with Carol Joy Cole. It won't hurt to ask her.

I suggest a handout of suggestions for further reading, which might include Trice's Backgammon BootCamp, Kit's 52 great backgammon tips, Chris Bray's new Backgammon for Dummies, and maybe Robertie's 501 Problems. I would give the handout at the conclusion of the class term.

Carol of course is also the premier source for for backgammon equipment, boards, books, precision dice, and lots of other stuff.

If you have time, I would suggest one class to cover topics such as clock play (get em started with clocks early!), the reasons for precision dice, chouettes and good places to play and practice online (dailygammon.com among others). Carol has an article in her upcoming newsletter that discusses this. I would also pass around copies of the FlintBackgammoNews and Chicago Point. Perhaps Carol and Bill would send you a complimentary copy for each student, once you have a class size established.

Definitely tell them about bgonline.org, and invite them to join our happy little crew here. We don't bite... much! LOL Also Michael Strato's gammonlife.com and Robertie was writing a weekly column for beginners at http://backgammon.pokernews.com/how-to-play/ I would also invite them to come to any local backgammon clubs, especially if the director will take beginners, and perhaps run a separate beginner tournament.

On boards, I would definitely suggest to them to stay away from the real cheap china small boards, but there are reasonably priced boards that are of good quality for beginners. It would be nice to bring in a crisloid board, probably the most common board used at tournaments and clubs, and a taki board.

Bill Davis has taught a free class annually for a few years in Chicago, I'd pick Bill's brain and maybe get some of the material he has used.

I'm excited for ya Bob!
