Well, it seems that a generous compromise offer here would have been to let Joe have first choice of either the correct cube decision, or the correct score sheet, and then you get to pick the other one.
Of course, Patrick ruled correctly on the pass, and you were not being unethical either by holding him to his decision. Haven't we all seen people take cubes in a 3 roll bear-off and then realize they had 7 checkers left instead of 6? People make mental errors and bone head decisions and they need to live with it.
That said, I believe that Patrick is obligated to convene a committee upon appeal regardless of how clear cut the decision was. He could assemble the entire 30 remaining players in the Super-32 into 10 committees of 3 and let Joe pick the committee he wanted after hearing the votes, and it would not have changed the ruling. Regardless, since Patrick did not announce or publish any changes to the official tournament rules (and if I know Patrick, he had the rules posted somewhere), he is obligated to follow them no matter how silly the situation.
