Technically, you are only required to compare scores, not to correct his if he does not. I would have a very low opinion of someone who compared scores, saw they were different, and allowed opp to leave his wrong.
I agree with this, and of course I will correct opp's score if I notice that it is incorrect. Sorry if that wasn't clear. But I don't think the burden is on me at that point to make sure that opp is keeping the correct score--e.g. if I say "12-8", opp says nothing, play continues, turns out opp wrote down 12-9--not really my problem, I announced the score before the game.
If opp says "12-9" or something and I think it's wrong then obviously I correct it. I don't usually steal glances at opp's scoresheet, they could be writing down an MET and I'd be pretty oblivious.
