Nice, well thought-out and expressed post, Tom.

If anyone here has been demanding, insisting upon, or strongly advocating the use of clocks in events lower than Open/Masters, I don't remember it. Possibly, eventually it could come to pass. But that's not what people here have been talking about.

CJC asked me privately how I would have felt about clocked BG if, when I made my return to the game in the early 90's, clocks were in force. She also pointed out that since I live in a town at least 1 1/2 hours from a BG club that I wouldn't have an easy time getting used to clocks at the club level. That's a fair and reasonable question. My answer was that 1) I returned as an int/adv player so (assuming no clocks there) I would have had a chance to get my feet wet before being faced with the issue of clocks. 2) At every stage of my life I've entered into situations in which I was unaccustomed and uncomfortable. I just consider that part of the learning process, even if I've had to run the gauntlet, occasionally. I've always wanted to play with (and hopefully beat) the best, no matter the game/sport. If I had to learn to use a clock to do that, then I'm sure I would have learned to use a clock. 3) In fact I did learn to use a clock away from a club -- talking my lunchtime sparring partner at work into using first an analog and then simultaneous analog and digital clocks to play over 200 matches in a 2 1/2 year period.

If you have the passion to play the game at the top level, you will adjust. If you don't have that passion you'll likely fall by the wayside for any of a number of reasons, clocks or not.
