Neil, Are you inside my head (again)? Art Benjamin and I discussed modified TC's over a year ago for my weekly events. And YES, I have been cogitating over a trial set of TC's that would work for the weeklies.

The challenge is that we play (as many others do as well) at a RESTAURANT on Tuesday nights and we must exit no later than 10:45pm (goal is 10:30pm. We are the last ones in the restaurant and our area is a nice alcove off the bar area.

With analog clocks, I can insure that a match takes a MAX time of the sum of the two player's time allotted and I adjust that time by using a charted table of start times for each round as well as adjusting the score and/or reducing the times. (e.g. score 1:1 with only 16 minutes each, when the chart-time is missed by 10 minutes).

With digital clocks and Time-Controls, there is NOT GUARANTEE as to how long the match will last, since 12 seconds TC could go on forever. However, reducing the TC to 8 seconds and perhaps 1.5 minutes per point (e.g. 8 minutes rounded for a 5 point match) may be a workable solution. I will experiment starting with 10 seconds TC, this week (tonight).

My re-entry (buybacks) weekly format (developed by me over 28 years ago) is a major contributor to the time-schedule problem. We allow rnd-1 buybacks and rnd-2 buybacks and only give byes when necessary in round-3. This consistently generates a SIX-round tournament on Tuesdays.

Ergo, we must move along smartly in order to make it happen; so we play 5-pts for the first four rounds and then 7-pts for the last two, assuming that the charted time schedule is managed tightly. Of course, the prize pool is significantly increased due to the buybacks and a player is still in any of the sidepools that s/he entered in round-1 (e.g. chasing that sidepool equity without having to re-buy into the sidepool again).
