BTW, I agree with Bob, and we've told teams this -- a team could (with our help if they so desired, and paid for it :) prepare a book each week, customized to their own and their opponents characteristics. It would have curves / tables that would anticipate 95% of the situations that come up. It would help tremendously.

Yes, exactly. I imagine that each coach has a greasy nerd following him around on the sidelines. Six days a week he's doing rollouts, preparing for the next opponent. On fourth downs (especially), the coach's homunculus whispers in his ear.

Probably the coach ignores him half the time anyway, which is bad for the guy's morale. Chuck, you need to come up with a term half as cool as "sabermetrics" so this poor fellow can hold his head up. (No, "safermetrics" isn't it.)
