In Response To: Clocks and thinking time for newbies (Jason Lee)

Hi JLee, A valuable and interesting exercise – thanx for sharing it. Some comments:

Reading between the lines I understand that your colleague has been trained in backgammon by yourself. As such I would expect that player to consider every single move to a much higher degree and therefore take longer to do so than most “newbies” would. Very few newbies have the benefit of a world class player giving them analysis for free; because s/he is receiving that s/he is going to consider things that an ordinary newbie would not even have an inkling of. So already I think the experiment is warped from the norm. That is not a criticism of the experiment but I think it should be taken into consideration and allowed for.

So onto your question of: “is this excessive for somebody who has just started to play backgammon maybe six months ago? I think not. However apart from that we must question if clock play is relevant to newbie players? As far as I gather it that motion is not the general intention of this forum. Again this could read as if I’m devaluing your experiment. Not so. I’m all for looking at things from different angles and learning what we can from doing thus.

Your last paragraph starts with “Incidentally.” I in no way consider this an incidental. Rather I think it goes a long way to proving the point that players can adapt their play from non-clock play to clock play very easily indeed.

Please keep us posted if and when you do the experiment again. It should prove all the more interesting if done again and again.
