I agree that money should not be the emphasis, but lets remember that backgammon is at its roots a game of chance and the topic cannot be avoided altogether as that is the source of much appeal for some people.
The cube can be used in match play, table stakes play (e.g. play for chips) or just by two people keeping a perpetual running score. Or it can simply not be used at all. I personally also really like the use of match play to get used to cube use while keeping it "friendly". Playing to 7 points with the cube is not a difficult concept for anyone to grasp. It is only difficult for them to excel at, just like moving the checkers.
While we may find it hard to imagine backgammon without the cube, lets remember that people had a very good time playing without the dube for 5000 years (and still do). Consider how many books have been written on backgammon that barely mention the cube, if at all.
The cube is an important, but advanced concept. I think it should be introduced conceptually, but care must be taken not to overwhelm the audience. The cube should be portrayed as a way to add skill and excitement to the game. It is not something beginners should see as putting the game out of reach to anyone without a computer brain.
