As Neil already posted, the *within' 5" is a good time to think about reshipping. A lot of the time it will depend on where the checkers are, but that's when you pay attention.

I think this was covered in 501 but I haven't had a chance to go over it. In general you should reship within 4, 5 is usually too many unless your spares are perfect or opp has other defects.

An attempt to illustrate the importance of the crunched board for bearing off versus more points in your board for that rare time you get a shot and hit it.

More inner board points is also good for not missing when you bear in with one number & off with the other number. Too many inner board points is bad for the race (esp. missing with doubles like 11, 22, 33, etc. that would save you a roll).

Michael Bo Hansen's 432 rule: when opponent has 4 checkers on the ace point, your winning chances are between 20% and 30%, depending on the location of spares. Rule works OK for between 4 and 9 checkers, after that it starts to break down.

These positions are never technically TG (closed board vs. checkers off), only TG if you think opp will misplay later cube action.
