People are pretty lenient if you need another break for a real reason though. In other words, if you're taking breaks to talk on your phone or smoke I doubt anyone is going to let you take more than one, but if you're going to the bathroom or grabbing something to eat/drink, nobody will care.

I disagree. There are people who care, and particularly if the match either started late or is proceeding slowly. This is particularly true if on the clock but also true in non-clocked matches. IMO, if (after you've used up your alloted break[s]) you MUST use the bathroom, then ask for permission but even if you get a 'no', go ahead and do it. Let the director decide if a penalty is appropriate. If you want 30 seconds to quickly go over (in the playing room) and getting a cup of coffee, glass of water, etc. then that might get an 'ok'. But anything more is non-standard and personally I don't think it should be practiced, unless you A) are playing a friend and B) are absolutely sure you won't run overtime.

I'd like to hear some ABT directors respond to this question.
