Richard gave good advice on this. But you are not blind to the clock's values. If you're taking a long time you can look at the clock and quantify just how much time is left. I look quite often when my opponent is on the clock to judge how much I've used, how much I have left, how much of the match is gone and how much of the match could remain.
The following is standard advice and obvious (except how often do obvious things fall by the wayside) -- when your opp is playing, fiddle around in your head with the race situation. That way if a cube situation arises (either your double/no decision or your take/pass decision) you often save time. Another thing that can be done while opp is on the clock is to start considering score based decision making. (Of course Robertie long ago recommended this practice even before the next game begins.)
