There are some rare 2-roll sequences where your are too good to double at -1-2PC, but doubling immediately will in those cases only be a tiny mistake.

Your idea that you should not double because your opponent would then use his free drop is just plain wrong.

My advice regarding doubling at any Post-Crawford score has always been this:

Double immediately unless you're absolutely sure of what you're doing.
