Clock Time Management

granted, an early key move or decision may prove most critical; I do not propose to shortchange such actions; however, I think a player should have an eye on both, play as the game/match situations dictate, keep in mind the clock situation, don't unnecessarily try to 'time' the match to end up with little reserve; as you state, the key situations may occur early, they more frequently occur late as they become more significant -- when their is less match remaining to overcome bad play, bad luck, etc. and as the trailer plays more aggressively (both with the checkers and with the cube)

my thought is more directed to the 'undeserved' time expended on common and/or non-critical play than to the 'deserved' time expended on the more complex and/or critical action
