Perhaps it is stating the obvious, but it comes down to an assessment of whether the contact favors the player with the lone checker back, or his opponent. And usually, a lone defender does not fare well against a mob.

Sometimes it helps to look at the situation from your opponent's point of view. Will he disappointed or relieved if that checker gets away?
