Defending against a Backgame

Pay now or pay later:
If you pay now and get away with it, are you home? No, not really, but you're much, much closer than you would have been if you hadn't paid off. You have only the 8 point to clear outside and a bunch of spares on the 8, bar, 6 and 4 to play with in the meantime. If you pay later, you have two stripped points outside and only a couple of spares--meaning you are very likely to leave one or several shots bearing in.
How bad is getting hit? Bad, but not hopeless. White still has to close the open 3 point and you will have a board of your own and potential fly shots to contend with. If you get hit in a roll or two it may be game over as White probably won't have made the three point yet but your board will likely have collapsed or else be on the verge of collapsing.
Summary: 10/7 9/8.
