Tournament rake rates

Rakes are a value proposition. An extra 5% rake on a $300 entry fee is $15. When people are spending $1500 for flights, hotel, meals, entry fees, etc. is an extra $15 too onerous? If the event is well run and enjoyable, it is worth it.
Is the venue at a premium, convenient location, in an expensive city, or at some dive an hour from the airport in a lower cost area of the country? Quality and plentiful staff, refreshments, equipment, trophies provided? If it is a poorly run nightmare, then 0% is too much when considering the expenses. High rakes set high expectations and it needs to be viewed that way, not dismissed outright. Any event that ultimately does not provide value, people won't return.
And I really don't have a problem with a director raking $20 on a $50 entry fee for the Novice/Beginner event. Is $20 too much to ask a player to contribute towards tournament expenses even if it is a large rake percentage-wise? Players at lower divisions get the same full weekend of enjoyment as those in the Open and there are fixed costs for the event. Some tournaments include a "hospitality fee" that is the same for all attendees. That's fine by me, and I like that approach; but some tourneys simply raise the rake to cover those expenses.
Finally, I fail to see why it is any less transparent when the rakes are given as actual dollar amounts instead of as percentages. One might argue that saying "here's the actual amount of money we're raking from you" is more transparent.
