Agreed it is good to stay at the hotel to support the tourney. But what if people don't? Or stay 2 nights instead of 3? Apparently the director will incur greater costs by not meeting a quota and is looking for a way to incent people to stay at the hotel without incurring costs to incent them (reducing the registration fee). So this is the approach taken. People living in the area that don't want to spring for $500 to stay at the hotel in effect pay a $100 subsidy. They are still ahead of the game. People that would have stayed 2 nights will strongly consider staying 3.
It is an odd arrangement, but creative. Yeah, if everyone did it, nobody would in effect get a discount, but the director is not looking for a way to give discounts, he is looking to fill rooms so as to avoid having to charge an even higher registration fee "just in case" and then pocket the profit. The director is taking the risk here, not the players.
It is important for everyone to understand the terms, but I think everyone should experience the event and then decide whether it was well run, high class, and a good value.
Let's not assume or imply before the fact that because it is different than what we are used to that somehow we are getting screwed. Chiva has an excellent reputation as an event organizer and I'm sure that is for a reason.
