Do Tournament Directors make too much money?

The NY Metro tournament lost money recently, I believe. With staff and expenses I would be surprised if any TD today doing an ABT event was making $1000, several of them have decided to discontinue the tournament.

It costs $50/ gallon for coffee, and they force you to buy their bagels and or donuts, instead of bringing your own refreshments. Room rental costs have soared, sometimes they want $3000/day for the playing room. Only cheaper venues can be considered.

I work closely with directors all over the country, and it has not become my goal in life to become one due to the fabulous riches to be had.
