When you close it, you turn it off and it awakes with a new game. As I see it, there are two options. When taking a break, simply leave it paused. This doesn't affect the battery life which is advertised as four to six years. The other option (which is also good if you are taking a dinner break and if you are worried about thievery) would be to write down remaining time, put the clock in your pocket, and then reset when you return to play. Like I said, setting is a breeze and you can certainly reinstate remaining times within 30 seconds.
