Hitting sure looks right to me if gammon losses didn't matter (and they do quite a bit here) so the question is, how big of a can of gammon worms does hitting open?

White's board is OK, but it's not scaring the bejesus out of me. 1-3 roll would be a tougher decision.

18/17*, 18/13. And when this play succeeds I still see a lot of (blocking & hitting) work to do.
