Openings - memory techniques

My memory sucks, so rules of thumb are very helpful to me.
When your opponent splits on the first roll, and you hit the lead checker loose, there's always the question of whether to drop a builder from the midpoint or split the back men.
Here are two rules of thumb I use.
When hitting on the 7 point, move exactly one checker from the midpoint (non-doubles).
When hitting on the 5 point, bring a builder down from the midpoint.
Obviously, no rules of thumb are right all of the time, or else they'd simply be "rules".
