who have you ever seen go into reserve time on an opening roll?

Uh, I don't know if I can say I've "seen" someone do it, but I have done it!

My practice for opening roll has become this: hit the clock when opp wins opening roll. If I win opening roll and my opp doesn't hit the clock, I don't remind him unless I'm going to think about it. If I'm not going to use up any of my reserve time it doesn't matter whether my opp hits the clock or not (which is actually what you said in your post). "No harm, no foul."

This procedure is consistent with "Munitz clock principle" -- the purpose of clock usage in BG is to complete matches in a reasonable time. If a judgment call is to be made and one path takes less (wall clock) time than another, that is the path to walk.
