The defects of double-elimination tournaments are interesting. The last match where the undefeated player (who goes to the final) is determined has a massive effect on your chances in the tournament, likely far too much for any one match. The winner of this match becomes 75% to win the tournament, and the loser becomes 12.5% (and also finds himself in a situation where he might not cash at all.)
In other words, the winner of that match gets a triple-bye to the finals.
However, Sam explained it to me another way. I said 'This gives the winner of that match far too great a chance to win the tournament." He responded by saying that in a single-elimination tourney, the undefeated player becomes 100% to win the tournament, an even greater swing.
