I'd be curious to know if Scotch Guard changes the feel of the surface. I do know that some surfaces scratch bakelite (more correctly "thermoplastic") checkers. The scratches will polish out with Simichrome, which is actually sold as a chrome polish and can be found at some auto parts stores and motorcycle shops (as well as online, of course).

Jeb recommended water-based polyurethane 'varnish' for cork surfaces, but I don't do that on antique boards. (I don't play on my antique cork-surfaced board so I don't do anything to that surface.)
