Why do like records play like records?

In general you will have less rounds if there is less variance between the various records. I am not sure if I can prove this but am pretty sure that it is true.
Now, by implementing a random draw for the first 4 rounds, you could also have an even MORE even distribution of records after the first 4 rounds than you would with Swiss (e.g. all players end up at 2-2). That would reduce the number of rounds even further. But you could also have half the field at 0-4 and half at 4-0 which would lengthen the tournament considerably.
