bg tournament movements --- which

movements work best for smallish fields, which work best for large fields? there are inherently problems when your field size doesn't equal n^2.
i believe that a tournament should: be fair, be based on backgammon results, increase the amount of bg played, and decrease artuments.
for instance a small field might try the round robin approach where everyone plays everyone else. if your field is not of the correct size, there will almost always be problems with tied records. another problem with the round robin movement is that sometimes one player is having a bad day and loses enough matches to know that he/she isn't going to win --- maybe they quit trying or maybe they suddenly get lucky and punch your ticket. this gives a real black eye to the round robin movement.
what other movements have been tried and what were the problems whth them?
