I think the point about the "spirit of the book" was that most situations where a cube is not shown, the goal is to discuss the concepts of checker play without the complications and consideration of the cube being involved. Magriel's book would have no less instructional value on checker play to someone that does not know or use the doubling cube. So why must the cube be on the board at all to evaluate the plays? The easy answer is that it should be cubeless if there is no cube shown on the diagram.

Obviously you can make any assumptions you wish. And if you find it instructional or believe it is more practical for serious players to introduce the cube in any position, or even at various match scores, well go right ahead.
