That player had to win more matches. In a 64 player field winning the one loss bracket by going 8-1 would be typical and that is possibly more difficult than going 6-0 to win the main.

An exact calculation is not really possible because it should include the aspects that the field is not of uniform strength and that players who advance tend to be the stronger players. The second consideration could be captured easily in simulations. The first could also be accounted for but requires some assumptions. The more uniform the field is the better the 8-1 is relative to 6-0.

I think Tom Keith will have more to say along these lines.
