You seem to not care for how they are in clusters timewise but is there something unfair about that? The geographical distribution is a little short for the south away from the coasts and for the northwest but that did not seem to be your point.

"As another example, it is nice to have a large, well-attended tourney such as the California State Championship to close the ABT year, but is it optimal to have a West Coast tourney, rather than a more centrally located tourney (or even an East Coast tourney recognizing the time zone differences), to determine the final standings?"

All of the tournaments together determine the final standings. Also I would much rather go to LA in Dec. and say Chicago in May than vice versa.

"However, the whole schedule seems somewhat random to me and could perhaps use some review and polishing/tweeking to the benefit of all -- both players and tourneys"

In your mind what would be ideal? Sounds like you you want the tournaments to be equally spaced in time meaning one every 2nd or 3rd week. I don't see the advantage.
