I'd like to alternate between short and long matches--say 7pts and 15 pts. Long matches are nice because they present opportunities for larger cubes and unbalanced scores. But they can often end up largely like money play, and that gets somewhat boring. I'm more interested in working on adapting to various match scores. Shorter matches--I'd lobby for 5-pointers if I thought anyone would bite--are the meat and potatoes of backgammon, so I think it's worth constantly working to master those scores. Yes, the shorter scores come up in the longer matches, but not always. You could play a dozen 25-pointers without reaching some of the "special scores" that come up all the time in 5-point matches. For example, most of us could use work at DMP, but how often are we going to end up in a DMP game playing 25-pointers?
