Bill, I agree with what you are saying here.

I think most players, when politely told to can the smack, will try hard to do so even if that is their normal style of game conversation. Oh, they still might slip now and then but in general they know they're the one out of line. I know very few players who are so easily offended that they are bothered by any complaints, eye-rolls, or whines at all from an opponent. Especially, you don't find the people sometimes described as having "sharp elbows and thin skins" in the Open. As a director, if an Open player who has no record of being a chronic whiner called me over to complain about an opponent's abusive behavior I would warn that player to cease and desist, and would then have a staff member or myself keep an eye on things over there from time to time. What action I would take would depend on the details of what was so observed.
