It's interesting that if Blue breaks the board (staying as far back as possible), White doesn't mind breaking his own board. If Blue keeps his board, is White supposed to run or break? By keeping the board, Blue moves up to 9- or 10-away from safety. Thus White might break his board for no good reason.
Note that Blue is far from gin if this turns into a race. That means he shouldn't be wasting (many) pips.
Suppose White is forced into the outfield and White rolls a hitting number. Is he supposed to hit?
Counting shots may not be the whole story. 4-4 is good for White, hitting or not. (3-3 is, too, but not quite as good.)
16/14 is the "tweener" play, and those are almost never right. I'll step up and give White the extra half shot.
