Time to talk about time settings

I still feel that it makes more sense for events to set their own TCs (e.g., longer TCs in multi-day tourneys like Vegas, shorter TCs in weekend events like Chicago or Carolina) rather than to have a stipulated ABT catch-all TC.

Isn't this the current system? For example, I believe the ABT recommended time controls for Doubles are 18s/move + 2.5 minutes/matchpoint. CJC will use 18s/move + 3 min/matchpoint at her Independence weekend event (Novi). AFAIK she doesn't have to ask Bill's permission to use these settings. It's her tournament and she specifies the conditions. She knows this; Bill knows this.

It is also true that the recommended settings are likely to be used most of the time. So there is some 'power' in those. Maybe that is what you lament?
