If I knew what perniciously meant I could probably answer this question.
I would think that the tendency for people when they have money at stake in a tournament is to play a little more cautiously than they do online. The best way to practice for a tournament, I think, is to play the bot 10 matches, and note your bad habits. Go to the tournament with that thought in mind, ie: not to slot instead of splitting, or take bad cubes, etc. etc.
Play the best you can and when confronted with a position you don't know the right play... Ask yourself what the bot would do in that situation?
Your guess is more likely to be right in that frame of mind, it sort of sells out your fear.
If your most recent memory is how the bot plays, then you will notice when the other guy is making overly cautious plays... or other blunders. This will give you confidence and assurance and should lead to better results.
