Andy Glazer was a backgammon player who had some medium sized wins in the 1980s. He then migrated to poker, where he became a prominent journalist(pre-boom variety) and the winner of a few tournaments.
He said that the better player gets the money FAR more often in poker than backgammon, and that's why he chose the one rather than the other. My impression too, though hard to quantify.
Of course, if you want backgammon to flourish, you want the illusion to be preserved.
