Theft at Recent ABT Events

Then, of course, Alan Grunwald had a board stolen last year at the Chicago Open.
One would think electronics gear would be attractive to anyone -- and easily fenced or used as one's own; however, stolen boards, as in Petko's and Alan's situations, point toward a backgammon player, or players. And these boards were in backgammon play rooms so I doubt that someone mistook them for briefcases -- they knew what they were.
Guess we remain ever vigilant. I have occasionally left my camcorder and camera bag at my table/board while I'm elsewhere in the playing room, but I think I'll revise those procedures to keep it in my hand or over my shoulder if I'm not at the board/table.
And players should not be lulled into complacency with the 'locked' rooms at dinner breaks, etc. I don't know the exact circumstances of Rod's and Julius's recent theft losses, but Petko's was from the 'locked' play room at a dinner break. I always take my stuff back to my room.
