Chicago Thief

In Response To: Chicago Thief (adambulldog)

I just wanted to clarify what transpired with the recovery of my board. The board was stolen at a tournament in Chicago (partially my fault as I left it in the playing room overnight). I filed a police report and hoped that at some point it would turn up.

It resurfaced at a chouette in Chicago and someone who was familiar with the board (it was made in Germany and quite unique, plus a 50th birthday gift from my dad) saw it and confronted the guy who had it, with numerous people present. His response was that he had bought it at a garage sale, a story which obviously has about zero credibility. But it is possible that he did buy it from someone, and that being the case, that someone was probably the thief.

My friend actually purchased the board then from him on the spot, at the price he claimed he paid for it ($335 I believe), but another local Chicago player later convinced him to return the money (with the threat of a police interview which was basically a bluff since I am sure the police would not be interested in devoting resources to the "bg board heist").

So we are left with a guy who may have stolen it, but claims not, but probably knows who did steal it, at the very least. The decision was made (not by me or any of the people involved in retrieving the board) not to take any action against him.

Personally I think that it would serve us all well, if the ABT would take an official stance, placing a notice on their web site of something like this....

Anyone caught stealing personal possessions or backgammon equipment or in possession of such stolen articles, will be barred from participation in any future ABT events. At the discretion of the tournament directors, any evidence obtained may be turned over to the police for prosecution.
