Another Overlooked Rule

In Response To: Another Overlooked Rule (Stick)

Oh yeah... Here was the second reason I barred Rod... BTW, all you BGOers will be glad to know that Rod and I chatted on the phone instead of airing our dirty laundry here today and we have reached a mutual understanding of sorts.

I am sure you, and HE, will all get a laugh out of this story.

My match with Stick was pretty critical. I still like to get ABT points, believe it or not, and the winner of our match would play for the undefeated finalist position... Which is the most stressful match you can partake in at an ABT event, even more pressure than a FINAL because, the loser gets NOTHING, yet. The winner is 75% to win the event!

So anyway early on I am thinking about a move, and I hear a noise and look up. Rod is walking past and he threw something on our table while I was concentrating on my move. Stick starts laughing and says: Swedish fish!!!!

Swedish fish??? I look over and there are these little red fishies in a candy bag... Hmmmm. Ok, so I smiled and went back to work. Then I realized, I am Swedish. hmmmmmmmmm. Stick likes to tell people I "fished it up" even when I am kicking his ass in a prop! So I am kind of adding 2 and 2 in my brain, and the answer is looking fishy to me. I figured it was unlikely that anyone knows I am part Swedish even though my last name ends in LUND, they usually spell it LAND. However, if I am wasting brain cells on that, I am not totally focused on my match. This is not good, and I decided to lay down the law just in case.

So next time Rod showed up I said: "Sorry, Rod, I am going to have to bar you". The look on his face was priceless. I wanted to set the tone of no nonsense when I am playing a match, in case the two of them were trying to be clever. I probably overthought that, or overreacted or whatever... But I made my point, and they fell all over themselves assuring me they meant nothing by it immediately after the match. I accepted that, and that was the end of it.

I was still pissed because I lost the match, and I had to pay Stick $20. That isn't such a big deal except that Stick told me later he had taken a twenty out to pay ME off, and he felt his MWC's were below 1%. I think it was more like 5%, but I didn't really calculate it out. It is like a guy reaching out to shake your hand then pulling it back when he realizes if he gets 66, 66 with your 21 in the middle, he could win... and then he does win!

Then Phil Simborg played me in the consolation, and normally I handle that stuff pretty well... and keep my head in the game. Otherwise I never would have been able to be the 2007 ABT Champion without ever winning ONE tournament. I take pride in overcoming adversity.

Phil beat me 9-0. Antoinette then thumped me in the last chance 7-3, right after Rod beat me 11-3 in the semi-final of the SJP, in which I refused to hedge.

Nice weekend!
