play 2 boards simultaneously, with players unable to see the other board
Works only if you - as you indicate - pit 2-man teams against each other. Player vs. player you can still play simultaneously, but the players necessarily see both boards. Of course it is impossible to play the games in sequence, as players would remember the rolls.
It certainly takes the luck factor of one side having better dice out
Which was my main objection, it certainly does not. Eg: first roll is 32, this is about a toss up between splitting and bringing 2 down. However, if your opponent plays the split on his board, and you choose 2 down, then you are lucky if the next roll is 55.
