Chess tournaments, as you all know, are often round robin. Players are not allowed to withdraw.

Surprisingly, there are practically no reports of collusion (losing on purpose). Two reasons:

1) Games are recorded, so throwing a game would be detected, and the player would be disgraced.

2) Rating points. They mean a lot in chess. Even though no $ is at stake, players play their heart out for rating points.

But a backgammon tournament, in Portugal.....
