As An Aside

1967 Indy 500. (I was an 8th grader for just another week.) Got the ticks from my cousin for after the first day rainout. Watched Parnelli Jones dominate the race in the first turbine car, until with a few laps to go it expired on a restart. Then on the final lap (while the leaders were on the backstrecth) there was a crash on the frontstretch and all you could see was smoke. Tom Carnegie (official track announcer for > 60 years!) shouting "Will he get through, will he get through??!! Yes!! Here comes A. J. Foyt...!!"

Early 1974. NC State at Purdue. I had a seat about 10 rows up -- eyes even with the top of the backboard. David Thompson could leap like no human I'd ever seen. Purdue gave them a game but the team which later that year beat UCLA (in the semifinal game, I think) and then took the NCAA Championship was too strong. Hard to enjoy a game when your team loses, but this one was worth it.
