I'll Kick it Off -- Recording Controversy in Atlanta

If a player could remember an entire match after it was played, there would be no way to prevent that player from documenting the match in a transcript later that day. (This is actully common in Othello and some other games as well.) A match after it has been played is history. No one owns history. No one can prevent a reporter or some other person from reporting on history. Therefore, no one has a right to prevent the creation and disemination of a transcript just because it intimidates them or they don't want anyone to know their ER for the match or whatever their reason for objecting may be. All that can be done is to make it difficult for a player to create the historical record by not allowing the camera. If there is simply not room in a crowded playing area for a camera and tripod, I have sympathy for not allowing the recording. If the recording is creating delays in play (for example - a person who has not yet learned how to use the equipment well), then I have sympathy for not allowing the recording. I can't think of any other reason for denying the camera that I would support. In general, recording should be allowed irrespective of the feelings of the second player. The right to record the match is not the same as the "right" to prevent someone from recording a match. This is my opinion. I know that others feel differently.
As an aside, if the directors had simply affirmed recording rights, much of the personal problems that developed would have been avoided.
