Things that make you go hmmm...

I believe that we are not only in the age of bots (as backgammon ages go) but also the age of information. There is more information on backgammon readily available now than ever before. And not only is there more information but the information is more accurate. There are books (I am currently reading Bagai's Classic Backgammon Revisited) out there correcting errors of past publications. There are websites like BGonline and Gammon village that offer not only bot analysis and rollouts but expert analysis by professional backgammon players on situational backgammon. Much of this information comes from "recorded matches". As a new tournament director and someone who is not only greatly passionate about the game but also greatly passionate about its long term survival, I would never rule against someone trying to create more useful backgammon information.
I remember playing my first match that was recorded. Not surprisingly it was against Malcolm Davis. I think it was at the Midwest Championships in 2003. It was just my 3rd or 4th ABT event and my reaction was that this was pretty cool. I knew about Snowie and its ability to analyze play but I had no idea one could import a whole match and have it analyzed. I was not intimidated at all and find it slightly humorous that someone might be intimidated by a video camera or someone recording a match by hand. Backgammon is a game and tournaments are a competition (the goal is to win). We are refering to events on the ABT, the American Backgammon Tour, the professional circuit of backgammon in the United States. Are professional athletes allowed to refuse to have their at bats or field goal attempts recorded? Of course not, the suggestion itself is absurd. Then why would we allow this on our professional circuit?
Quoting one of my longtime friends, "Nuff said!"
