Yeah, I have to agree to a certain extent. I can't fathom why Ray was so adamant or demandig, but Malcolm can be quite brusque. He believes he has a right to record all of his matches and some people don't care for the extra pressure. Some others, like Ray Glaeser perhaps, my be using gamesmanship to gain a psychological advantage. Malcolm is dead serious and I am 100% sure that a number of people over the years have allowed him to record a match when they would have preferred not to.
I can't even imagine the level of incompetence it requires to take 2 hours to decide that a roll of the dice is required. CJC being a consultant is nice, and she has a lot of experience, but she is all about warm and fuzzy, not decisive. At Howard Markowitz or Patrick Gibsom events, this would never have become such a fiasco.
I never force anyone to accept "automatics" in a chouette. I wouldn't ever insist on recording a match either. That is a bit over the top, imho. I think videotaping matches is actually a woefully inefficient way to study. If you are even TRYING to remember or develop a library of how people play... Good luck. It takes the same amount of time to enter a match from a tape as it did to play it. In the same time, you could have played 3 15 point matches vs. Gnu recorded perfectly and been learning from your mistakes. If you want to go out and spend $500 on a video camera, go for it, but then you have to travel with it... Avoid the growing number of theives at backgammon tournaments, (Malcolm had a camera stolen once, I think), and pay extra baggage fees... Cuz you are someone who probably NEEDS his own clock too!
Whatever! If someone doesn't want the match recorded, who gives a shit? At least that is one you won't have to waste time recording... AND you won't be wasting everyone else at the tournament's time arguing either, which is more important imho.
