I think the rules of chess state that you have to record your moves. There is an important reason because in Chess you play 40 moves in 90 minutes or something like that so you need to verify you got to the 40th move sometimes if there is a dispute.

Various attempts have been made to copyright chess games but it never worked out as far as I know.

As Rory rightly pointed out we are in the information age so deal with it everyone!
